The list of possible suppliers is now huge, below is a list of just a few of the most popular.

VT Cash Book - FREE
VT software is not well known to the general public but has a huge following in the accountancy profession. VT Cash Book is a cut down version of VT Transaction, a fully functional bookkeeping system. Cash Book is FREE and available for download from the VT Software web site. Not as pretty as Sage or Quickbooks but much easier to use and much quicker data entry. For small businesses that do not need the accounts software to produce sales invoices, or need a cloud system, this is the product we recommend.

VT Transaction+ £125.00
This is the full version of the above. It creates sales invoices and will deal with complex VAT situations. We use this software in house and have done for many years now. The cost is £125.00 and this is a one off fee. There is no need to pay a support charge each year. It is simple to use and very easy to correct mistakes. We particularly like the way you can create a sales invoice or customer statement and e mail it to the customer with hardly any effort at all. As with VT Cash Book it is not pretty to look at but it does its job well. For larger businesses that do not want a cloud system this is normally the product we recommend.

Sage
We have used Sage for over 25 years now. It is perhaps the most popular accounting software in the country. It will produce nice graphs and import & export data (which VT will not do) so this could be important. Certain versions have additional modules like stock control and this may sway your decision. As more functions are added the price of the software increases.

QuickBooks
Many people prefer QuickBooks to Sage. It has a slightly better interface and this appeals to non accountants.

Cloud Accounting/Web based packages
The industry is moving more and more towards cloud based products. With these packages the software is hosted on a server and accessed via the internet. The advantage for the customer is that you can access the software from anywhere with internet access and from any machine. It also means we can log into the system to prepare the accounts or to fix problems. So your accounts are available to you 24/7. Another advantage is that the provider runs all the back ups for you.

Kashflow
This is an on-line accounting package. It costs around £16 per month. It produces very nice sales invoices and is reasonably easy to use. We have clients using this software and they are pleased with it.

Clear Books
As with Kashflow this software is hosted on the web. It offers different levels of product at different prices from £5 per month. It is easy to use. For smaller businesses, especially if they are not registered for VAT, this product is worth considering.
